“I'm not going to interfere with their religious direction”

David Wertheim

For about nine years now, David (Groningen, 1970) has lived on the Baarsjesweg, on the corner of the Piri Reïs Square. He has a Jewish background, is a historian and director of the Menasseh ben Israël Institute. His son Arif, four years old, enjoys the view of cranes and excavators at the construction site. According to David, the mosque colours the neighbourhood. He has always hoped that the mosque would come. ‘They should convey what they want to convey. To me this is just a mosque for Muslims of Turkish origin who want to pray and need a place for it.’
