The association behind the mosque is called ‘Aya Sofya’, after the great mosque in Istanbul, which was once a church and now serves as a museum. The name ‘Westermoskee’ came about only in the late nineties, but this did not affect the name of the mosque association.

The association Aya Sofya is affiliated with the Turkish religious organisation Milli Görüş. Like other mosque communities associated with Milli Görüş, Aya Sofya also has a women’s organization and a youth department.
