Call to prayer

The Ezan (also spelled Azaan, Adzan or Adhan) is the Islamic call to prayer that is recited by the muezzin or imam, often from a minaret. Five times a day, Sunni Muslims are called to prayer by means of the Ezan. In the Netherlands the public call to prayer is a sensitive topic. A few mosques are using the right to call to prayer on Fridays. Municipalities often attach conditions regarding duration and volume of these prayer calls, as they do for church bells. Muezzin direct their Ezan towards Mecca, while raising their hands to their ears.
