Westermoskee

The name Westermoskee, Western Mosque in English, refers to the Westerkerk (Western Church) in Amsterdam, but also to Western Europe and West Amsterdam. It connects the west with the east and can be symbolically seen as the pinnacle of integration. The name was coined by Haci Karacaer (Milli Görüş) and is inspired on the naming of Dutch Protestant churches to the direction of the wind, like the Noorderkerk (Northern Church) and Zuiderkerk (Southern Church) in Amsterdam. Opponents say the Westermoskee refers too much to the Westertoren (tower of the Western Church), one of the Christian symbols of the city.
